How do I change a story to an epic?

I created some stories and realize now they should be created as epics. Is there anyway to change this without deleting the story and recreating it as an epic?

Select the story needing to be converted to an epic.
Click the ellipses at the top of the story.
Select Move.
Complete the fields to move to an Epic - *Name is required.

If your Story contains Sub-Tasks...

How to Migrate a Story, with Sub-Tasks, to an Epic with Stories

View the Story and delete any Epic Link
Choose Move from the dot-dot-dot menu
Select Epic as the Target Type, provide any required values and complete the Move.
Confirm that the Story was converted to an Epic (1). Note that the Sub-Tasks are still the same type.
Duplicate your browser Tab
In both tabs use the dot-dot-dot menu near the Child Issues Table and choose Bulk Edit
IN TAB #1 Choose Move issues; move the issues from Sub-Tasks to Stories; provide any required Status Updates and complete the move. Once complete, you’ll see the Epic - but with no children - this will be corrected next.
IN TAB #2 Click on “Choose Issues” Select all the issues and choose Next
Choose Edit Issues On the Edit Issues page, update the Epic Link to be the Epic created in the Steps above Complete the Edit
View the Epic to confirm all the previous Sub-Tasks are now Stories
If you “lose” the converted stories, before they can be linked to the Epic… You’ll need to search for them before you can bulk edit and reattach	Sample, your JQL will vary project = HSB1 AND issuetype = story AND "Epic Link" is EMPTY AND updatedDate > startOfDay("+14h")

When i try this, it seems i am forced to move the story jira to a different project.

i am unable to select the same project

You should be given the chance to choose from all existing projects you have access to with the current one being the default.

The issue was permissions here - there were some specific legacy restrictions on the "create issues" permission on this one project that was inhibiting me.

Strange to think that converting an object == a move, I dont get that logic but maybe it is a naming thing `move / convert` maybe more accurate.

Thanks for taking the time to document the steps this was frustrating until I found out it was a move, rather than convert. I don't know why Atlassian continue to make this stuff non-intuitive or hard to find, even in their context menu stuff "if I search for convert - why not show me the move option rather than nothing..."
