Is there a way to implement a renderer for a specific custom file type? Is there a class I can inherit from and register it as the class to use when rendering a page?

As far as I understood you want to register a handler for e.g. ".foo" files right? I am just asking as there is also the concept of a custom content type which can be added to a page similar than an attachment.
As far as I know there is no way to register your own handler which integrates into the preview of Confluence.
