we have Jira online backup running and we see a zip file is created in export directory. the zip file has two xml in it. what are these xmls, why there is two xmls.

While restoring data from the xml backup, you have to import the whole zip and not the individual xml in it.
Active Objects contain the data from the new data storage that is available in JIRA. https://developer.atlassian.com/server/framework/atlassian-sdk/active-objects/
And entities contains everything else.
