How can I expand the width of a mutli-select list custom field?

My project uses a multi-select list custom field that has long strings of text. Users have reported that it is difficult to select the right option because they cannot read all of the text or scroll to read the text. Is there any way to expand the width of that field? I tried using JavaScript in the field configuration, but didn't have any success.

Similar questions have been asked before. You need to go in and modify the source code for the multi-select field. When you do that ALL the multi-select fields will use the new width. Every time you upgrade you'll need to go back in and update the code, which may not be in the same place.
