What is the impact of changing jira.text.character.limit from 32767 to 548574 characters

Hi,

We are migrating a Jira Instance into another bigger instance, and we found the character limit is set to a higher value (548574) in the instance being migrated, however in the target instance it is set at 32767. If we increase the field character limit, will there be an impact? If yes, where? how bad?

Thank you Craig. That is what my initial thought, but when I saw Jira gave a very large limit 2,147,483,647 characters... I was wondering if there will be a significant impact if very few issues use longer content... I understand, attachments may be one option instead of placing content in the field directly.

The issues I’d consider are:

* are people putting content in that doesn’t really belong in JIRA (maybe longer form content should be in confluence or bitbucket for example).
* from a performance point of view, the longer the content, the larger the index is likely to be which is what powers the search. If there is lots of long content, it might cause performance to drop quicker

Id suggest working with the admins (will need some databas queries) of the existing system to see how many issues have content that requires longer field lengths. If possible, work to drop the limit as low as feasible and work with the users to understand where longer form content should be stored
