Some sites in confluence crash and cannot be opened

Question

Every now and then we come across Confluence Pages that fail to open with the following error.

org.springframework.transaction.TransactionSystemException: Could not commit Hibernate transaction; nested exception is net.sf.hibernate.TransactionException: Unable to commit against JDBC Connection
caused by: net.sf.hibernate.TransactionException: Unable to commit against JDBC Connection
caused by: java.sql.SQLException: Invalid state, the Connection object is closed.

Can anybody say what could be the issue here? Since we only have a starter license we cannot access Atlassian's usual support.
