difference in versions availability for apps

I have different versions of an app on my prod and stage server instances. I want to update the Stage to have the latest version but it doesn't show the update buttons. How can I apply the newest version in Stage so I may test it before I update it in Production. In particular am looking at the Adaptavist Scriptrunner for Jira. I have version 4.3.16 in prod and 5.1.6 in stage. According to my manage add ons screen in prod version 5.3.9 is available.

Any suggestions on best practices for managing versions of apps, other then test first then implement to prod that is.

Are the versions of Jira the same in both stage and production?  Many times plugins to Jira have very specific version ranges in which you can install the plugin to. 

Take a look at https://marketplace.atlassian.com/plugins/com.onresolve.jira.groovy.groovyrunner/versions

This explains which versions of this particular plugin can only be installed to specific versions of Jira.  Since we know that the production is running 4.3.16, we can look at that link and in turn see that you must be running a Jira version between or including "Jira Server 7.0.0 - 7.3.5".

But if we look at 5.3.9 of scriptrunner, we can see that this plugin is only compatible with Jira 7.2.0 - 7.8.1 right now.   I would not recommend trying to install this updated version of this plugin until after you have updated Jira to be a version in between or including those specific Jira version numbers.

If this isn't the case, then please let me know exactly what version of Jira is installed to each production and staging instance of Jira here.
