Which classes do I use to assign a custom field to a issue type?

I'm writing a plugin where I need custom fields and a custom issue type.

I see how I can create a new custom field using the CustomFieldManager, but I don't see in the docs or examples how I can assign that custom field to an issue type via the field configuration.  Any pointers into which classes could help? Thanks

Also, the next step would be the class needed to assign the custom field to a screen, any pointers there too would be much appreciated.

Granted these are a few years old, however I believe that this has not changed that much within current versions of Jira and in turn should still be valid.
