Caveats when using Script runner Scripted Fields for fetching data from external databases?

I am looking a way to fetch data from an external DB for data validation of a field in the Transitions before it proceeds to next status. Let's say, I want to validate whether the entered product code exists in the external DB. 

Is there a way using ScriptRunner to do that in writing scripts in Validatrors of the Transition?
