How to make a custom URL Field visible when it is used for input?

I want to add a URL field to my issues where a user can enter a URL as a link to other documentation.

 

I have added the URL field and done all of the screen config stuff that needs to be done, but because there is no value in the field by default, it is i not showing on the screen,

Is this even possible?

Empty custom fields are not displayed on the issue view screen. Ability to choose whether to show the empty field or not is an open request in Atlassian's jira. See link here - https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRASERVER-2997
