Is there a way to show a list of previously executed JQL queries without having to save them as filters e.g. the last 10 queries that have been carried out.

It's not as intuitive but you can just use your back button, providing you haven't let hysteresis creep in by navigating somewhere else inbetween your queries.
This was a feature in JIRA and was removed due to some unknown reason. Vote up on the ticket to restore it
