JQL: comment ~ "\\[example\\]" does not work, although stated in docs

I'm on JIRA 6.1.4 and tried the fuzzy search with [ inside that I've quoted like it is described in Advanced Search documentation.

Error Message:

The text query '\[example\]' for field 'comment' is not valid: probably your range query is incorrect.

Any hints? Thanks in advance, inka
