Confluence: how do I keep track of a 'release' of the content

Let's say I'm using Confluence for product documentation and I need to have a historical record of the state of the content with each release.

How do I make the whole space as a particular release version?

I see in the docs that it says to create a new space for each version. That seems odd to me, what if I'm publishing the content from Confluence? Wouldn't that mess up the URLs?

We use the Copy Space plugin to copy the space for each version:
