Mail Server: JIRA works, Stash doesn't

therealdrag0

I have JIRA and Stash running on the same VPS. I've configured my SMTP mail servers exactly the same, but JIRA works and Stash errors:

java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused: connect

What could cause this? Is there a difference in how they try to email?

Turned out to be McAffee blocking Java and Telnet attempts out, but ignoring the JIRA service's attempts, and that's why JIRA worked even though they are all on the same machine.

Firewalls are most likely. SSH from each box involved and try telnet MAILSERVER_IP 25, to see if you can get a socket connection?
