Is the tools / import word doc different than an attachment?

Chad,

The two of these are rather dramatically different.

An attachment would be attached to the page and then, to view the attachment on a Confluence page, you'd have to use the Office macros to display it.
Importing a Word document will turn it directly into Confluence content rather than an attachment. As such you could then throw away the Word doc (this is my personal preference as the content becomes "live" and can be collaboratively used and referenced far more easily). The only thing you'll note is that the Word import uses the somewhat clumsy "anchor" macro for TOC and how to get from the TOC to the content. Easily edited out to the simpler Confluence content TOC, however.

Chad. Yes it is different - doing that places the content of the Word doc onto the actual page as editable 'wiki page' text (vs an attachment that maintains its content within the Word document).

You can display Word attachment text onto a page using the View Page macro.

Each approach has its pros and cons - I'd suggest experimenting to see which works best for your needs.
