move confluence to another server

I need advice on how to migrate confluence to a new server. I'm currently using redhat 5.11, mysql 5.0.95 and tomcat 5.5.23. I would like to move to redhat 6.8, mysql 5.1.73 and tomcat 6.0.24.

I tried rsyncing the install and home directory to the same location and also did a mysql backup and restored it to the new server and copied the confluence.xml into tomcat/conf/Catalina/localhost.

I didn't need to edit the jdcb connection because it was using localhost and I made sure the database account is on the new server. The error that is thrown in tomcat and atlassian-confluence.log are not very user friendly.

I'm using confluence 3.3 and I followed the instructions from that guide. However i'm unsure on some steps.

on Step 4 from that guide it says to delete the content from the home folder, do I need to get confluence running first with an empty home dir?

3.3 may be a little different, it's been a while since I used 3. But I think it's the same basic idea.

I would get Confluence running empty first - that way you know it's working on the new server.

I tried to do an empty install and got an error when it tried to create the schema.
