fatal: 'origin' does not appear to be a git repository

Please, go to the directory where you have cloned your git repository and run the following:
git config -l

I only just saw your response. Meanwhile, I had fumbled my way around the problem by adding a README.md file and pushing it to origin master, then backtracking, and following the steps to add the file I actually needed, then I was able to push it to origin master.
Had the same issue, unfortunately git config -l didn't do it for me.
