How to change field attributes in JIRA depending on status

Question

A project would like to change field attributes based on the status of the issue.  In one state they would like a field optional, another state they want it required, and even in another state they want the field "read only".   Can this be achieved using "out of the box" configuration options?

You can make a field mandatory during a transition using a validator. It can't be dependent on the status (only in the transition to a status). So,

1. for optional use a transition screen including this field

2. for mandatory use a transition screen including this field and add a validator that this field is required

3. for read only remove the field from your edit screen. (since you have this field in the transition screens you can edit only during transitions)
