See https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRA-43461 (and corresponding parent issue). We needed to uninstall the plugin before upgrading, or any issues that watchers were added during creation become corrupted.
It may make more sense to file this as an issue at their issue tracker: https://bitbucket.org/rbarham/jira-watcher-field-plugin/issues
