Selecting the style for pasted text formats the entire page

Question

I pasted a bunch of text from a PDF into TextMate to get rid of the Rich Text Formatting, then pasted it into a page in confluence.  It comes in fine with line breaks where they need to be.

Some of the lines need to be formatted as Heading 1, Heading 2, etc.  When I select that line and select Heading 1, ALL of my text on the page is set to Heading 1.  If I manually insert a line break and retype the heading, I can format just that line just fine.  Also, if I select a couple of lines and then indent them, the whole page indents, not just the lines I selected.

I'm running 5.1, and the source editor plugin is not available for it yet, so I cannot see what's going on.

If I just paste directly from the PDF to Confluence, I get a table around each page of content from the PDF.  The only way to get rid of that is to then copy the text from each cell of the table and paste it outside the table, then delete the original table.

Any thoughts on how I can get my pasted content to format line-by-line?

edit: Oh man, trying to edit any pasted text is aggravating!

I ended up going back and pasting directly from the PDF.  It still caused some issues where the last line in bulleted lists were linked to the formatting of the following line.  And doing indents of bulleted lists wasn't working as expected.  I finally got everything looking good in Confluence.  However, when I exported to PDF, some of the list items have 2 or 3 bullets in front of them.

I cannot be the only one that's run into formatting problems when pasting content.  This is one of the reasons we are moving away from MS Word.  Are there replacement editors I can try in Confluence?

I'm using this for technical documentation.  I do not have the need to do fancy formatting while editing.  Ultimately, I don't want to do any formatting while editing beyond specifying things as headings, paragraph, bullet lists, etc.   The actual formatting for the document should be handled by a stylesheet upon PDF creation.  I currently have the capability to do this with the Scroll PDF exporter, but the WYSIWYG editor in Confluence is putting things in the source that are not visible when editing, and that's causing problems.

As a workaround, you could just add the heading 1 and heading 2 from Insert >> Wiki Markup and you could just put the heading 1 or heading 2 on the line that you wanted to. For the syntax, please refer to the following documentation.
