Where can |I read about merge pull requests mechanism?

Hi,

I read somewhere that you using git fetch instead of git push when merging a pull request. I tried to think of it a bit but could fully understand how it works.

My assumption is that, GitLab, for example, created a local temporary workspace on the server to megre between branches and then push. On the other hand, I assume that you are using a remote repository but fetching the source branch onto the destination branch doesn't really megre. You still need to merge or run pull and not fetch.

Can you please explain how it works?
