The view "jumps" when dragging/moving tickets in the backlog

I am trying to move tickets up and down in the Jira backlog, but the list/screen keeps "jumping".

Example: I grap a ticket (or group of tickets) and start dragging it down. After a second or two while I am scrolling downwards, suddenty the view jumps up, back higher up in the list.

Is this a problem others have experienced? Is this a bug in Jira, or just something strange going on my side only?

I think I started experiencing this problem a month ago or so

Could you confirm whether you're using Jira Cloud or Jira Data Center, and the version if you're on Data Center?

A similar scrolling issue has been reported on Jira Data Center 10.3.4, following an upgrade from 9.12.x:

It may not be the same issue, but it's worth comparing.

Also, does the behaviour occur in different browsers, or only in your usual one?

These details would help determine whether this is a known Jira issue or something specific to your environment.

Hi Markus,

While you check Sarah's question, there's a way to rank tickets on Cloud that skips the long drag down the backlog. The Rank a work item page (https://support.atlassian.com/jira-software-cloud/docs/rank-an-issue/) says you can select the work items while holding Shift or Ctrl, right-click, pick Move work item and then To top of backlog or To bottom of backlog. The same page gives s + t and s + b as shortcuts to move a work item to the top or bottom of its current column.

You're not the only one seeing the jump. The closest public bug I found is JRACLOUD-87335 (https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRACLOUD-87335). Atlassian closed it in 2024 without a fix, but someone commented on 14 October with exactly what you describe. The window scrolls back to where the item sits while they drag it.

Before raising it, I'd try it with the Epic panel closed. JRACLOUD-99753 describes the backlog misbehaving when that panel is open on page load, though it's a different symptom. Then I'd try an incognito window with your extensions off. If it still jumps there, I'd send Atlassian Support a short screen recording and mention that ticket. Does it happen on every board you use, or only this one?

We are on Jira Cloud.

My "usual browser" is Chrome, and I have tried in its incognito mode with the same result (i.e. the jumping is there). I have also tested in both Edge and Safari, and there is jumping also in these browsers. (Mac.)

I have two boards that I switch between "for practical reasons", one scrum board and one kanban board. The jumping happens in the backlog view for both.

Yes, this I do very often. But it is when I need to do that granular up/down the screen jumping becomes a problem. (Thanks for those keyboard short cuts btw.)

Thanks for sharing. Strange that it has been around for so long. (And strange that I don't at all remember having this problem during my many years of Jira usage.)

I never (very rarely) have the Epic panel open.

As I just wrote in another comment, I have this problem in both my Chrome, Chrome incognito, Edge and Safari.

I have two separate boards within the same project and the jumping happens in both. I have not tried any other project, though. Will do that.

I can also confirm that I'm experiencing the issue in Jira Cloud and that this is something that started to happen more recently.

Can confirm this is a new issue within the last few days. The first we noticed it was Wednesday, October 28. It was likely due to the column scrolling changes JIRA made on October 27. Please fix the backlog scrolling issue - just because my cursor is in one spot doesn't mean I want you to force me back up to it if I'm scrolling. This is really a time suck and super frustrating as someone who scrolls endlessly up and down in the sprints and backlogs hundreds of times per day.

Hey @Markus Landin, thanks for testing all of that so quickly. It jumps in Chrome, Edge and Safari alike, and Or and Kristin are seeing the same thing. So I don't think it's your setup.

Atlassian logged a bug on 29 October as JRACLOUD-99995 (https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRACLOUD-99995) where the view "snaps or jumps back to the highlighted issue" when you scroll away. Their steps describe it after the drop rather than mid-drag, so if yours jumps while you're still holding the ticket, I'd say that in a comment there. It's already in Waiting for Release, but I couldn't find a date on it, so I'd vote and watch it to hear when it ships. The workaround they give is to select Move to Top or Move to Sprint instead of dragging, which I know doesn't cover the granular moves you need.

For those, I'd switch the backlog to Compact density and narrow it with a quick filter, so the item you're dragging has a much shorter way to travel while the fix is pending. Kristin's timing lines up with the modern boards rollout that started on 28 October, but Atlassian's note only mentions boards and columns, and you saw it start about a month earlier, so I wouldn't count on that as the cause. The bug is filed against company-managed projects, so if the other project you try is team-managed and it jumps there too, I'd add that on the ticket
