I recently open-sourced a small tool: Jira Data Generator
It creates ready-to-import JSON files filled with random Jira issues with complete histories.
What it does:
- Generates any number of issues spread across the months you choose
- Builds realistic status histories (Open → In Progress → Resolved/Closed, including reopen loops)
- Lets you control the history length, min/max status and assignee change counts for each issue.
- Lets you control the pace, from issues that move in minutes to ones that take days
- Merges several generated files into a single import
With the current state of the script, the focus is on creating histories with status and assignee changes. It’s handy for creating issues to use in various tests.
Building this script is no big deal in the age of AI, yet I thought many will prefer to use this tested script rather than building it from scratch.
