Draft autosave is useful, but it only protects us when the saved version still contains the content we need.
When text disappears during editing, an accidental change or editor issue can become the latest saved version. At that point, autosave alone does not help recover the previous content.
Requested improvement
- Keep several recent versions of each draft.
- Allow authors to preview and restore an earlier version.
- Show when the last save completed, with a clear warning when saving fails.
- Offer recovery after an unexpected refresh, browser closure or interrupted session.
Restoring an earlier version should preserve the current draft as another version, so recovery does not cause further content loss.
This would be especially useful for longer articles and detailed answers. Members invest time in writing, formatting and adding examples. Being able to recover that work would make the editor much more reliable.
This complements fixes for individual editor bugs: even when something goes wrong, authors should have a way to get their content back.
