Hello Atlassian Community,
Keeping a Jira instance healthy means regularly reviewing what’s still needed. Over time, automation rules accumulate, plans become outdated, and user accounts may no longer be in use. Finding the right cleanup candidates and acting on them requires considerable admin effort.
Instance Optimizer for Jira brings cleanup and performance-maintenance capabilities together inside Jira. Building on project and issue archiving and custom-field optimization, we’ve added automation rule cleanup, Advanced Roadmaps plan cleanup, and user cleanup.
Here’s a closer look at what’s available.
Take action with guided cleanup
Knowing where to start is often the hardest part. The new clean up capabilities can provide you with:
- Recommendations that highlight items, such as automation rules or user accounts, that may need attention.
- Flexible filters to help you narrow the results to your environment and requirements.
- Bulk actions to let you act on selected items without working through them individually.
You stay in control of what changes. Recommendations help you identify candidates; you decide which actions are appropriate.
Three new ways to clean up your instance
Here’s how you can use the new capabilities to clean up rules, accounts, and plans.
- Automation rules: Review recommendations, filter candidates, and disable or delete selected rules in bulk.
- Users: Identify potentially inactive, never-used, or duplicate accounts. Filter by directory, group, license, or last activity, then deactivate, reactivate, anonymise, or delete selected users in bulk.
- Advanced Roadmaps plans: Find plans that are no longer needed using recommendations and filters, then delete them in bulk.
You decide what’s safe to change. Review dependencies—including service accounts—and follow the documented export and backup guidance before taking action. Deleted plans can’t be recovered from Instance Optimizer.

Part of a broader instance-health toolkit
The new cleanup capabilities sit alongside the tools already available in Instance Optimizer:
- Project and issue archiving to reduce your instance’s active footprint.
- Custom-field optimization to identify redundant or unused fields and review their configuration.
- Index auto-healing to detect and repair indexing issues across nodes.
- Database integrity checks to detect and fix supported database inconsistencies.
- Safeguards to help maintain stability as your instance grows.
Together, these capabilities give admins a central place to review maintenance needs and take action.
