Re-using an abandoned workspace

Years ago, I created a bitbucket workspace with some account. I was the only one using that workspace. Now I want to re-use that workspace, but I lost the account details.

I have created a new account, and want to create a workspace with the exact same name, which is not possible. How can I find out what account I used for that workspace, so I can either switch to that old account, or transfer the ownership to my new account? The workspace is not public, I can only see the error message "his workspace ID is taken. Try another ID." when trying to create a new workspace.

Since the ID is taken, the workspace still exists under your old account, so what you need is the email address that account uses. Atlassian won't disclose it for privacy reasons, but it usually shows up in one of these places:

A local clone of any repo from that workspace. Run git remote -v in it: an HTTPS remote looks like https://username@bitbucket.org/workspace/repo.git, which gives you the old username. git log also shows the email the commits were made with, which is worth trying too.
Your mailboxes. Search for emails from Bitbucket or Atlassian. Since late 2025 Atlassian has been notifying admins of free workspaces that haven't been used for a while, so that notice may be sitting in the right inbox.
Password reset. Use "Can't log in?" on the Atlassian login page with every address you might have used, and see which inbox gets the reset link. Note that for Atlassian john.doe@gmail.com and johndoe@gmail.com are different accounts, even though Gmail treats them as one.

Once you're in, open your avatar → All workspaces. If the workspace was deactivated for being unused, a link there takes you to the reactivation flow, and then you can invite your new account and make it a workspace admin.

If none of this finds the address, I've flagged your post for Atlassian Support so they can look into it on their side. And welcome to the Community!

Thank you for your prompt answer.

I think to know the email address of the old account now, but I no longer have access to it - the domain name expired - and plus, if my guess is correct, bitbucket insists on "completing my account" first. As can only get access by accessing a code sent to that email address, I cannot log in.

Hi Dries Moors, that explains it: with the domain gone, the verification code has nowhere to land, so there's no way around it from the login screen.

If the domain is available to register again, that's your best option. Register it, set up a mailbox for that address, and the code will arrive, so you can finish the login, reactivate the workspace and add your new account as an admin. Atlassian has said before that they verify account ownership through the email address, which is why getting that address working again matters so much.

If someone else has taken the domain, it's down to Atlassian Support, and my flag is already with them. Please don't share the old address here, since the forum is public.
