I am currently supporting a client with bulk ticket creation in Jira Cloud using the REST API. Could anyone please clarify the limit on the number of subtasks that can be created in a single bulk API request?
Hi @Abubakar Pokam Tchawa
Base on the documentation the limitation regarding the number is 50.
Regards
On top of Florian's 50: sub-tasks count toward it. No separate sub-task limit. Tried 51 under one parent on a test site, 400 and nothing created.
What bites on bulk jobs is that errors are per element. One bad entry in a mixed request still gives a 201 for the rest, with the failure listed under failedElementNumber (zero-based) and a reason like "Please select valid parent issue." Check the errors array even on a 201.
Parents first, sub-tasks in a second call. Same-request parents aren't documented.
Back off on 429, it comes with Retry-After.
Hello @Abubakar Pokam Tchawa
Just one small clarification: limit of 50 applies to the entire bulk request, not to the total number of subtasks under a parent issue.
So if you're creating 10 regular issues and 40 subtasks in the same request, you've already reached the limit.
For larger imports, simply paginate them into batches of up to 50
Atlassian confirms the limit here: https://developer.atlassian.com/cloud/jira/platform/rest/v3/api-group-issues/#api-rest-api-3-issue-bulk-post
