Create a release action no longer available on a Kanban Board

After every build I create a release to remove all the cards in the 'Done' column on our Kanban Board. After my latest release of Jira Cloud, the action that I used to use at the top of the board is no longer available The action used to allow to create the release, add all the cards in the 'Done' column, allow me to give it a release date and it would release it adding it to the fixversion. The work around was for me to create a release on the release board then build update all the cards in the done column with that as the fixversion and then release it. Is there a new version of this old action?

Hi,

You're not missing a setting. With the new board view for company-managed software spaces, Atlassian removed release management from the board itself. Official docs now say releases are managed from the Backlog or the Releases tab, not from a Release action on the board.

What to use instead:

1. Releases tab (closest to your old flow): create the version, set the Fix Version on the Done work items (bulk edit works well), then open the version, change status to Release and set the release date. Once all Fix Versions on those items are released, they drop off the Kanban Done column (that's how the default Kanban subfilter works).
2. Backlog > Versions panel: create/assign versions from the version panel, then release from the Releases page.

Your workaround (create the version on Releases, stamp Fix Version on Done, then release) is exactly the supported path now.

Note: multi-space boards still use the classic board experience and may still show the old Release menu; single-space boards get the new view.

Thank you for the quick response, it is really too bad they removed this functionality and the supported path adds many additional steps. I will now have to manage several boards this way because we have multiple teams.

Hi Mike, on top of what Thanasis said, the workaround shouldn't be permanent. Atlassian is bringing the action back: JRACLOUD-99853, "Restore the "Release" action on Kanban boards", is already In Progress (https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRACLOUD-99853), and Matt Di Berardino from Atlassian commented earlier today on the new board's early access article that they're "talking days rather than weeks" for the flow to be available again. That's his estimate, he was clear he couldn't promise a date. Watch the ticket and you'll get notified when it lands.

I'd also check with your admin. When I tried this on a test site, the old Release option under the board's "..." menu only disappeared once the "New board experience for company-managed spaces" beta was turned on under Admin settings > System > Beta features. If your admin enabled that beta, switching it off should bring the old board back with Release in that menu, though that switch is site-wide, so every company-managed board on the site goes back with it.
