Ticket count can hide overload
A common workload check is to count how many Jira issues each person owns. That is useful only when the issues are reasonably similar. In engineering, delivery, consulting, or project teams, three small tasks and three large tasks are not the same workload.
This is where assignment automation can become misleading. If the rule balances only by issue count, the queue may look mathematically even while one person receives far more effort than another.
Use the signal your team already trusts
SnapAssign’s Load-Based assignment can calculate load either from assigned-issue count or from the sum of a selected numeric Jira field. That makes it possible to use values such as Story Points or Estimated Hours when those fields are already part of your planning process.
The important part is not the field name. It is whether the field is consistently populated and meaningful enough to influence assignment. A field that is optional, stale, or used differently by different teams can create a false sense of precision.
Example: same ticket count, very different work
Suppose Alex has three open issues worth 3, 5, and 2 story points. Sam also has three open issues, but they are worth 8, 8, and 5. A count-based view says 3 vs. 3. A value-based view says 10 vs. 21.
If the next issue is 5 points, a load-aware rule has a much better basis for choosing the next owner. This does not replace planning or capacity conversations, but it prevents the automation itself from ignoring information the team already uses to estimate effort.
One configuration detail is easy to miss
When you use a numeric field for Load-Based assignment, make sure that field is available and populated on the issues that participate in the rule. SnapAssign surfaces errors in issue activity when the field required for load calculation is misconfigured or missing.
A good rollout is to test the rule on a small project, compare its choices with the decisions a team lead would have made manually, and only then widen the source criteria.
For teams where workload varies sharply from issue to issue, see how SnapAssign on Atlassian Marketplace can use Load-Based assignment with a numeric Jira field instead of relying on ticket count alone.
