I have built an automation that will create an Epic once a JPD idea has reached "Planned" status. However, I can't create the appropriate linkage between the epic and the idea, so the Delivery tab is populated correctly.
Your lookuptable is confusing me but that's not your issue so setting that aside for my brain to stop being tilted.
Assuming the ticket is created just fine -
The trouble with linking things to a ticket "just created" - is the chicken or the egg syndrome.
The issue may-or may not be visible to the system by the time you get there.
Automation behaves in a single instance/snapshot in time - while some actions are not subject to this - this may be one of those situations where it is. In other words it won't dynamically update - like your browser requiring an F5 (Refresh) to see new data.
You may need to break it out into its own action and try a "ReFetch" then tell it to link after that.
See if that doesn't resolve your problem.
You able to give screenshots of the automation itself to help clear up your approach?
Thanks for the reply @Matthew Sinclair When a JPD Idea is transitioned to Planned,
Then leverage lookup table for Team's to Jira Space
Then throw a log message to ensure lookup table is working
Then Clone the JPD Idea type into Jira as AI-Initiative type in the backlog of the team and I have tried "is implemented by" and "implements".
It was exactly that, having the linking happening in the clone action wasn't seeing it. Breaking out the linking portion to its own action has it appearing in the Delivery section correctly. thank you!
You are most welcome.
Only other suggestion I have is to ensure your Automation is slim and trim - keep the scope narrow and efficient in steps. Especially as JPD has its own pool to draw from exclusive from Teamwork/Service Collection pools.
The usage/billing changes coming in Dec will sneak up on you otherwise.
Happy Automating!
Hi @Mike Espelage ,
Use the “is implemented by” link from the JPD idea to the Epic. That relationship is what populates the idea’s Delivery tab.
Add this action immediately after your existing Create Epic action, while the rule is still acting on the idea:
Your rule should read: Idea transitions to Planned → Create Epic → Link idea “is implemented by” newly created Epic.
