Cycle time is useful, but it can hide the location of the delay
A ticket that takes eight days from start to finish tells you that delivery was slow. It does not tell you where those eight days went. The issue may have spent six days waiting for review, or it may have bounced between two statuses several times.
For process improvement, “how long did it take?” is often less useful than “where did it wait?”
Time by Status turns workflow stages into measurable time
SnapMetrics includes Time by Status reporting so teams can analyze how long Jira issues remain in specific statuses. The report can be filtered to the work you care about instead of forcing every workflow into one generic view.
That makes it possible to compare patterns such as time spent in In Progress, Waiting for Customer, Code Review, QA, or any other status that has operational meaning for your team.
Look for repeated patterns, not a single slow issue
One delayed ticket may be an exception. Twenty tickets that all spend two extra days in the same status point to a process problem.
A useful review is to group the work by project or issue type, then ask whether the same status repeatedly absorbs the largest share of elapsed working time. From there, the conversation becomes concrete: is the delay caused by missing capacity, an approval dependency, unclear entry criteria, or a queue that nobody actively owns?
Use the report to decide what to investigate next
Time in Status is not a performance score for individuals. It is a diagnostic view of how work flows through the system. The strongest use is to identify the stage that deserves a closer look, then combine that signal with context from the team.
If a workflow change reduces the time in one status but increases it somewhere else, the report also helps you see that the bottleneck moved rather than disappeared.
If your team can see that delivery is slow but cannot see where the waiting happens, explore SnapMetrics on Atlassian Marketplace and start with a Time by Status report for one workflow.
