Jira android app. The due date does not show in Android app.

michael brooks

Jira android app. The due date does not show in Android app. It does show in web version. I have it set under Space Settings > Work Types as visible (not Hide when empty).
What more can I do to get it visible on my android app? I must see due dates!!

Stupid question - but is Due Date on the "View Screen" for the issue types/space in question?

Sometimes System Fields are not entirely friendly when it comes to visibility until you drag it out into the light.

Other suggestion is place the field into the "Description" section layout wise - as opposed to the details section (Context I think its called?).

THANK YOU for responding and helping!

Please, there are no stupid questions. I don't quite understand what you're asking. But on NONE of my Tasks in Canban is there a due date shown, not when I scroll or any time EXCEPT when I click on and open a task.
It won't let me move it to the description section. It's stuck within the Context Fields section.

michael brooks

My answer was about the Android App. I CAN see the due dates on the web version of Jira in Canban. I just can't see any due dates anywhere on Canban for Android App. This is a terrible missing element for the mobile app!

michael brooks

Oh! Labels don't show on the Android App in Canban either.

Everything works correctly in Trello. Why not in Jira?

1: You are referring to a "Kanban" board - that's a little different context. Kanban boards are run on a preset filter/configuration based on board settings. Which also answers to the Space Settings/Configuration - that being the "Screens" I mentioned. Screens in any space dictate what fields the space has available to it - there are 3 contexts - Create, View, Edit. Majority of spaces combine all 3 contexts into one screen - some break it out. If the field in question is not present on the screen - even if you happen to have it in your layout - it may not show up like you expect it too as system fields behave a little differently in most situations than you'd expect - compared to a custom field.

If you are pushing the Kanban Board route - you may find this works:

Go to the Kanban Board itself - look for the "…" next to its name - Board Settings

Go to Card layout

Add the Field "Due Date" to the Kanban Board to make it prominent (And/Or Backlog if you are using a Scrum variety)

If you are unable to add the field - go to the next section and come back here and try again.

====

This is entirely optional - as it won't change your Kanban board but:

In my sandbox I can move the Due Date field to Description - but that's also likely due to the fact the field is on the "View Screen" as well.

To check the screens go to the following:

Space Settings on your Jira Project (not the Kanban Board)

Work Items

Screens

Select the Issue Type(s) that are relevant

Choose the "View" Screen (combined or otherwise)

Make sure the Due Date field is present - if it isn't - simply add it - the layout will deal with ordering.

Note: You may need to add it to Edit as well.

Once you've done that - you should be able to move the field to the Description section. (If needed at all)

I'm still learning the parts of Jira.

I may have something mixed up. I only have a "Space" and that space IS a Kanban board. On the left side of the screen where "For You" "Recent" etc. are there is no BOARD. Just Spaces. When I go to … > More Actions I end up in "Space Settings" not "Board Settings."
Therefore, I don't have "Card Layout" as an option.
I can't move Due Date field to Description
When I click on "Fields" Description and Due date are locked (under the Actions column the three dots are grayed out and I can't change anything about those fields). The same is true about other Fields (Original estimate; Parent; Start Date; Summary.

I'm wondering why I have a Space that IS a Kanban. It sounds like I should have a Space and under that space I should have a Kanban and maybe other items I create like a Page.

I think I have something fundamentally wrong with my setup.

michael brooks

I created a new Space, used the "blank" template. I now do have more options (Layout, Screens, Fields, etc.) Under Work item layout… I CAN now move Due Date up to Description Fields. But I still don't have a due date on my android mobile app Kanban.

And when I move an item in that new blank Space to "Done" it does not get market in Status as Done. It seems nothing works like it should. All of this seems automatically configures as you would expect in the Trello version of their apps.

Matthew Sinclair

A "Space" is the Jira Board itself. (I tend to call them Projects :P )

The "Board" is what you view as a Kanban Board - there's also a "SCRUM/Agile" version as well (Sprints).

You will find the Space/Board in the left navigation pane.

The Space will be noted by it's Icon and display name (IE: Acme Jira Space) that you see when you go to Space Settings/Details.

The board will be immediately below that as a sub-item - usually noted by a 3 collum icon next to the name - by loading that board you will gain access to the features. Assuming you are a Board Admin (As opposed to space - as Boards are elegant Dashboards) - you can adjust its configuration there.

Note: a Space can have more than one board - some have boards that sprawl across multiple spaces (Excluding Team Managed Spaces).

All new "Jira Spaces" come with at least 1 board - you should see it there.

This may help you find that:
https://www.atlassian.com/agile/tutorials/how-to-do-kanban-with-jira

As for the field itself in the layout - you have to adjust the screens as I said - but I'd suggest you start with Kanban board as you may not need to do that anyway.

Matthew, Thank you so much for trying to help. But I'm more lost now than I thought I was before.
As I try to figure this out I created a 3rd Space as a Scrum. NOW I see totally different things like Backlog. I don't have Backlog in the other two Spaces I created. AND in this new space I can't find any Kanban view in the web version. But I do in the Android App. I create SOF & Backlog items in the web version and they don't show up on the Kanban view on my phone. It's confusing that the two platforms display things so differently.
The bottom line is I can start from scratch. How can I create a simple Kanban Space that…
1) shows the due date in the android app. and the Labels also.
2) changes the Status to Done when I move items to the Done column?
I can start all over.

Matthew Sinclair

Jira Spaces are not intrinsically "Scrum" or "Kanban" only - they can be both, either/or.

So you don't need to create a new space for each one.

You can, however, create as many boards as you want on a given space.

You need only go to the space in the navigation tray on the left side and click the "+" to create a new board - and choose the "kind" of board you want.

Scrum/Agile boards employ sprints - usually 2 week intervals (or your specified length of time) - these employ a "Backlog" - you pull from the backlog to assign items to a sprint - and work the tickets in the given sprint.

Kanban boards can also have a backlog - but its more of a informal choice than anything - as most workflows are "To Do" → "In Progress" → "Done" or variation thereof - some with far more workflow statuses than you want.

Due Date is likely a "Default" item on Scrum in most templates as it would make sense to set a Due Date based on a Sprint window - oddly enough I've not seen this but it's reasonable to presume its baked in with new spaces these days depending on the template you chose.

Both allow you to change what/how cards are displayed as I indicated earlier.

Also its quite possible you are using a "Team Managed" space - these can be a little different than "Company Managed" which share global configurations with the Site.

Either however have the same basic kit - that being you are able to change the Board Settings in how they display your Jira Cards (or tickets/issues).

In any case I would suggest you go to your desktop - open a browser instance and follow my steps I detailed in changing how your board displays fields.

A Kanban board would be easiest as Scrum can get a little confusing - you may need to just simply make a new board.

Go to the Kanban Board itself - look for the "…" next to its name - Board Settings

Go to Card layout

Add the Field "Due Date" to the Kanban Board to make it prominent (And/Or Backlog if you are using a Scrum variety)

If the field is missing - check the Screens in your Space Settings - where you attempted to adjust the layout - make sure "Due Date" is on the View/Edit Screens (Create is ok as well). You should be able to move it around at that point - but even if you do change the layout - the Board Settings still control what is visible to you.

As any changes to screens/layouts only change the ticket view itself.

If this gets to be too much of a headache - we could meet up on Discord and I can attempt to walk you through it if you are able to share your screen.

Sadly my org wouldn't take kindly to my sharing any content. 😁

Once you figure it out - it becomes very trivial and you'll laugh at the memory.

@michael brooks displayed fields (e.g. Due date) behave a bit differently on mobile vs. on web app. I've just tested this, and to have Due date visible on mobile app and Kanban board, you need to add the field to card layout on the web 👈

The web display might be messed up a little then ⚠️, but the mobile one should display that field on the board cards then.

Web part was modernized not that long ago and now you have toggles to display specific fields, but from what I know, this hasn't yet been introduced on the mobile version.

Cheers,
Tobi

I've never had (found) Board Settings, just Space Settings and there is no Card Layout, only Layout and it seems to be useless (Work Item layout; Work types in this project). So, i try work item layout and only in certain Spaces am I able to move Due Date up to Description Fields. But it doesn't make due date viewable on Android App. This is why I haven't been able to follow your advice.

michael brooks

I just don't have Board settings… see attached. And Due Date is grayed out under Fields. So, I can't make any adjustments. I have Spaces… nothing about Cards. Due Date can't move up from Configuration to Description fields.
