Backup and Restore - Confluence OnPremise

PAWAN BILLA

I have taken the backup of my Confluence space in On-Premise environment and it is in XML format with size 1.2 GB. And there is no option to Import Or Restore the backup file in my Confluence Space Environment. I am attaching the screenshot of my Confluence Space Tools.

Could you pls guide

Confluence Backup-Restore.png

how to Restore or Import the confluence pages through this XML backup file that is generated by Confluence itself ?

Hi @PAWAN BILLA

You won't find this under Space Tools: importing a space export is done in the global administration, so you need Confluence System Administrator permission.

Because your file is 1.2 GB, don't upload it through the browser (that's only meant for small spaces and often times out). Use the restore directory instead:

Copy the export file to <confluence-home>/restore on the Confluence server. The exact path is shown on the Backup and Restore screen.
Go to Administration (cog) > General Configuration > Backup and Restore.
Under "Import from the Home Directory", select your file. Untick "Build Index" if you'd rather rebuild the index later at a quiet time.
Click Import.

A few things to check first:

Use the original export .zip that Confluence created (it contains the XML plus attachments). Don't unzip it or pick only the XML file.
You can't import into an older Confluence version than the one you exported from.
Make a database backup before you start, as Atlassian recommends.
Users and groups are not part of a space export, so check the space permissions afterwards.

Details are in Atlassian's guide "Restoring a Space" for Confluence Data Center.

In my Confluence space, there is no Option for RESTORE, its just having the Backup option.
Also can you pls guide how to get to: [<confluence-home>/restore ]

Settings:

Hence, I do not get the option of "Import from the Home Directory", so kindly guide a little bit in detail.

Ah ok, that's the issue. Restore isn't in Space Tools at all, it's only in the global admin screens (Administration > General Configuration > Backup and Restore). You need to be a Confluence system admin to see that. Same with the restore folder, that's on the server itself.

So you'll have to ask whoever runs Confluence at your company. Send them the .zip from the backup and mention the space key. One thing to watch: if a space with that key still exists, the import fails, so they need to delete or rename it first.

Thanks for your prompt reply!
I have chekced thoroughly in my Confluence space, however couldn't find the area where I can raise the ticket to find the Restore option available for me. Could you pls guide is there any common mailbox to get it sorted ?

That part depends on your company, I can't see your internal setup from here. But in your first screenshot there's a red banner at the top of your Confluence with "Raise a support ticket" and "Getting access to Confluence". I'd start there, that's usually the team that runs it. Just say you need a space restored from an XML backup and attach the zip.

We built an app

https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/977066696/modern-importer-exporter-for-confluence?hosting=cloud&tab=overview which support space level multiple pages/blogposts export and import, if you have still not resolved this issue, please consider to try our app maybe resolve your problem. It support 3 raw foramts of storage. Hope this helps you.

PAWAN BILLA

which App you are referring to, could you pls share the url or link ?

@PAWAN BILLA have you managed to reach out to your Confluence admin regarding this? I don't have DC instance to check it out, but for cloud these are the instructions to import a space to the site 📚 (I suspect something similar is for DC as well)

And as Thijs pointed out, this (probably) is available only to Confluence administrators.

Cheers,
Tobi
