Different Original Estimate value on jira card vs OE in status great gadget

Question

We are using Great Gadgets time in status to view the work item age of in progress work. We have some examples where the original estimate value of a card is 3 days. This has not been edited in anyway, set at 3 days and visible in the card and filter as 3d.

However, the time in status gadget is showing 1d for original estimate and not 3, even though the filter populating the gadget is showing 3d.

Anyone have any idea of what might cause the difference?

Hi Brian, the exact 3-to-1 ratio makes me suspect a unit difference and not a wrong value. As far as I know, Jira doesn't keep "3d" as days; it converts the estimate into an amount of time using the Working hours per day setting under Time tracking, which is usually 8, so your 3d is stored as 24 hours. If the gadget then turns that stored amount back into days using 24-hour calendar days and not your 8-hour working days, 24 hours comes out as exactly 1d. That would be the whole gap.

I'd start by looking at Settings > Work items > Time tracking to see what your working day is set to, and then I'd compare one more card, because a 2d estimate should show as roughly 0.67d in the gadget if this is what's happening. If it is, the gadget's own settings are where I'd look for a working-hours option, and the app vendor's support can tell you which day length it assumes.

As the work item itself and the filter both show correct data, I would first look at the Great Gadgets configuration. Check the gadget's working-time settings and see exactly which estimate field the gadget is configured to display. A different hours-per-day conversion can make the same Jira time value appear differently in a reporting gadget. I would also test the same work item in a separate Filter Results view with Original Estimate displayed. If Jira consistently shows 3d there but Great Gadgets shows 1d, you've isolated the discrepancy to the gadget.

I'd contact the Great Gadgets support team, as they can confirm how that specific gadget converts Jira's estimate value.

Set a test issue's estimate to 1d. If the gadget displays 0.33d (8h / 24h), it confirms the gadget is hardcoding a 24-hour day calculation.
