Jira draft tickets

Can someone tell me why Jira does not have drafts? I find it hard to believe this feature is not available when all the users out there put so much effort into creating tickets only for our machines to restart and then 'poof' all that good ticket chat has gone up in the wind like my dogs backside air.

Am I wrong? Is there a hidden drafts feature where my good work is waiting for me to finish so that my devs can start on the task?

There is now a partial improvement.

In Jira's newer Create experience, if you click outside the Create dialog, it moves into Dock mode at the bottom of the screen instead of closing. You can then navigate around Jira and return to what you were writing.

Why ? i think it will be proper if you ask Atlassian. We as Community members can only speculate why

Hi @Stuart McMorris , I can't answer for Atlassian about why it doesn't have drafts, but if you generally need lots of time to complete all the information in a Jira ticket, what about creating as the first status in your workflow something like "Draft"? The issue then is saved and won't disappear so you can come back to it, but the status makes it clear it's not ready for someone to start work on. You might need to customize things a bit, for example, making sure you don't add an assignee until the status after Draft.

Hi @Arkadiusz Wroblewski - this sounds promising and something that could help my current situation. How do I find this Create experience and interesting dock mode you mention because I cannot see this in my logged into Jira mode (Chrome/desktop)? You share an automation link - sounds like a workaround and not something that should really come out of the box. This tool should be less complex than it already is.

@Laura Campbell thanks for the comment. I'm trying not to overcomplicate our boards and workflow. Still amazed that a simple drafts feature where I can easily pick up from where I left off is not available after all the years of Jira development.

I don't normally create long tickets but the one I did yesterday had some great thinking in it! And I've had a few occurrences in the past when a draft feature would come in handy.

Like to avoid a hack or a automation workaround if I can help it.

I see you point, but I also see the downside, that when anyone starts a new work item a draft is made, loads of people leave on not creating a work item and then you will be left with possible hundreds or moere draft issues.

This would cause admin effort again to remove all outdated or useless non-finished draft wok items.

Theier is an upside and a downside on having a draft funtion, my 2 cents on the topic.

@Arkadiusz Wroblewski yes I understand I use this thanks. Problem I have is my computer restarted and my Chrome tabs were closed so the dialogue window I had with my nearly finished Story has vanished.

I agree @Marc Koppelaar that administering this may be a headache. Trello solves this pretty well with draft cards.

I will accept this one and in the future save the ticket and mark it "DRAFT:" in the title field to avoid this in the future If I know the ticket is a dense ticket. I'm sure the ticket auto saves as more content is added or am I making too many assumptions again.

(I'm not a Jira punter have used it for years).
