Editing long pages in Confluence – always returning to the top of the page

Hello everyone,

we are currently using the Data Center version of Confluence.

When editing very long pages, I often need to make changes somewhere in the middle of the page. To do that, I first have to scroll down quite a bit. However, when I enter edit mode or edit the page again, I am always taken back to the top of the page.

This makes working with long pages quite cumbersome.

Is there a way or best practice to make editing long pages easier or to stay at the current position while editing?

Working with very long pages in Confluence Data Center can indeed be challenging, especially since the editor typically opens at the top of the page when entering edit mode. Unfortunately, this is the current default behavior and there isn’t a built-in setting that automatically keeps the editor at your previous scroll position.

However, there are a few workarounds and best practices that can make editing long pages easier:

1/ If a page becomes very long, Atlassian generally recommends breaking it into multiple pages organized under a parent page. This improves navigation and editing performance.

2/Adding a Table of Contents macro at the top of the page allows you to quickly jump to specific headings within the page.

That is unfortunately the normal behavior in Confluence Data Center. When you open a page in edit mode, it starts at the top, and I’m not aware of a native setting to keep the previous scroll position.

What usually helps is splitting very long pages into smaller child pages, adding a Table of Contents macro or using clear headings so navigation is easier.

Usual best practice is just to break long content into smaller sections/pages.

Thank you very much for your detailed explanations and tips!
It really helps me understand that this behavior is normal and what workarounds or best practices exist for editing long pages more efficiently.

So far, we’ve been using a workaround with the “Find and Replace” function: we select a piece of text – for example, the first 3–4 words of the section we want to edit – and enter it into the search field using Ctrl + F. This way, the editor jumps directly to the desired spot.

I will also try your suggestions, such as breaking the content into multiple pages, adding a table of contents, and using clear headings.
