How do I get or set automation rules using the API?

Question

We have a lot of boards which we want to add custom automation rules to. Every rule is slightly different for each board, so just writing one rule and applying that to multiple boards won't work.

We can't seem to find the Trello API endpoints for getting and setting automation rules?

While there is no api to add automation, you can enable the use your automation across boards. It starts with good design. My approach had been to keep the intake and completion across boards while allowing each board automation between intake and completion customised to the specific needs. I also externalised the creation of content as much as I can so that these are dynamically created. I also deploy the use invisible labels to manage my automation.

A case in point, is an immigration consultant that handles 8-9 case types based on intake from Lawmatic each having different checklists at the intake and board specific collection of custom fields but a common completion/archival processes. Presently there are 12 rules - 50% of them are shared by 8-9 boards and most of the single board automation is on the master board.

Hi Harold, welcome to the Trello Community!

We currently do not have an API for creating automation rules.

You can however use our API to create your own integrations and scripts. You can do this by setting up webhooks that look for changes that happen on a board same way that the trigger in Automation works: https://developer.atlassian.com/cloud/trello/guides/rest-api/webhooks/ -- The webhook will send a payload each time an action happens on the board so you can filter and create your workflows based on that.
