OpsGenie app puts my Android phone in "Do Not Distrub" mode after notifying in "Bedtime Mode"

If I get paged during the night, while my phone is in "Bedtime" Mode I do hear the notification, but as soon as I acknowledge it, the OpsGenie Android app puts my phone into "Do Not Disturb" mode, which silences my morning alarm clock until I manually disable Do Not Disturb, causing me to be late to work. I do not always remember to disable Do Not Disturb mode before going back to sleep, because I am tired and not thinking clearly.

I have a Pixel 8a, running Android 15, Build BP1A.250305.019.

Yes, this is due to an Android limitation; however, the workaround is simple.

First, it is important to know that there is a method of allowing apps to override DND that is native to Android, which, when utilized with Opsgenie or any other app, will not cause the issue of DND being left on.

When you initially install Opsgenie on your phone, the app will ask permission to access your DND settings. This is NOT the Android setting that allows apps to override DND; rather it is a separate Android setting that allows Opsgenie full access to control your DND - that is, it gives Opsgenie the authority to turn DND off or on. This is the feature you will want to disallow.

This can be done by navigating to your phone's settings and finding the 'special app access' menu. There will be a submenu for 'Do Not Disturb Access' - find Opsgenie within this list and toggle off its access. If you can't find this menu, you can also uninstall the app and reinstall it again; This time when the pop-up menu asks you to allow Opsgenie to access your DND settings, don't change any settings.

You can still let Opsgenie override DND by going to Settings >> Notifications >> Do Not Disturb >> Apps and adding Opsgenie as an allowed app to this list. This will allow Opsgenie to send notifications when the phone is in DND, but the important difference with this feature is that app will not be allowed to turn DND off or on, which is what the 'special app access' allows.

Thank you, Shashwat! In my version of Android, I was able to find and disable this setting in Settings > Apps > Special App Access > Modes Access.

I was able to verify that OpsGenie still had permission to interrupt Bedtime and Do Not Disturb modes in Settings > Modes > {Bedtime, Do Not Distrub} > Apps.

I have a very similar issue, on pixel. However, by disabling dnd modes access I prevent the app from overriding the volume control on the phone.

So despite not being on bedtime mode, it doesn’t wake me up. Is it possible to have an alert override bedtime mode AND override the volume settings?

On Pixel devices, Bedtime mode further restricts notification behaviour. There is currently no way for Opsgenie to override these restrictions or force a higher volume.

You can allow Opsgenie to break through DND/Bedtime for notifications, but you cannot make it override the system volume or Bedtime mode’s volume limits. This is a limitation of Android’s security and privacy model.

Here’s what you can do:

Allow Opsgenie to Bypass DND:

Go to Settings > Notifications > Do Not Disturb > Apps and add Opsgenie as an allowed app. This lets Opsgenie send notifications even when DND.

Set System Volume Before Bed:

Make sure your phone’s media and notification volumes are set high enough before going to sleep. Bedtime mode or DND will not increase the volume for notifications, even for allowed apps.
