There notice says there are patches for each point release (4.4, 4.3, 4.2, 4.1) of Jira but I don't see one for 5.0. Is there one rather than upgrading to 5.1?

I think for JIRA 5, you should upgrade to 5.0.1 or higher. There is no other patch. Btw, 5.1 is still beta.
