We are experiencing the exact same error when trying to upgrade from Confluence Data Center 8.5.4 to 8.5.5 using the following installer: atlassian-confluence-8.5.5-x64.bin

It looks like all binary installers are currently broken...

As per the Upgrade steps using installer method, could you please follow the below steps after downloading the installer file

Change to the directory where you downloaded Confluence then execute this command to make the installer executable:

1$ chmod a+x atlassian-confluence-X.X.X-x64.bin
Where X.X.X is the Confluence version you downloaded.

Next, run the installer – we recommend using sudo to run the installer:

1$ sudo ./atlassian-confluence-X.X.X-x64.bin
Now you can continue the upgrade as usual

I am checking this internally with the team, meanwhile, you may use the below commands to reset permissions for your confluence user.

1sudo chown -R <confluence-user> <confluence-install-folder> 2sudo chown -R <confluence-user> <confluence-home-folder> 3sudo chown -R <confluence-user> <confluence-shared-home-folder> 4sudo chmod -R u=rwx,g=rx,o=rx <confluence-install-folder> 5sudo chmod -R u=rwx,g=rx,o=rx <confluence-home-folder> 6sudo chmod -R u=rwx,g=rx,o=rx <confluence-shared-home-folder>
Replace <confluence-user> with the dedicated user account that runs the Confluence process, and <confluence-install-folder> and <confluence-home-folder> with the appropriate values.

But i'm not happy with this workaround with root rights.

The whole installation has after this kind of installatin other ownership and permissions than all otrher versions before 7.9.18

I have already contacted support regarding this issue and received the following response:

One of our key objectives with this upgrade is to enhance the security of the Confluence install folder.

We have adjusted the permissions for the installation directory to "read" and "execute" only. This means that users can run programs or files and read the contents of the directory, but they cannot modify, delete, or create new files.

Also, the blank chmod -R adding execute to every file feels dirty. I tried the install as root then chmod, and without the chmod +w a bunch of stuff gets messed up. This seems like the incorrect path.
