Why I had to reapply license after upgrade?

I just applied version 8.3.3 on top of version 8.3.2. The update ran fine. However, when the server came up, it showed that the "Your subscription has expired." Reapplying the license fixes the issue.

Why does this happen and how can I prevent it next time without needing to reapply the license?

The exact message is "Your subscription has expired. This site is now read-only. To keep using Confluence, renew online or contact us."

The upgrade process is to download the atlassian-confluence-8.3.3-x64.bin file. Use a response file to execute the bin file similar to the following:

atlassian-confluence-8.3.3-x64.bin -q -varfile response.varfile

After installation switch the symlink /opt/atlassian/confluence to point to the new 8.3.3 installation folder.

The Confluence service was stopped before the bin file was installed. This is on Ubuntu 20.04.6 LTS.

What method did you use to upgrade the server?

Also, "your subscription has expired" is not a message that Confluence will throw when a licence has expired.  Could you give us the full, and exact text of the error message (if you're not running the admin interface with an English account, please give us the raw text so we can run it through a translator to see if it does come up with "subscription has expired")
