How many steps/versions do I have to go through to upgrade from 6.4.9 to the current version (9.4)?

As Jira 6.4.9 was released in July of 2015, there were many versions between now and then. You can check the full list here:

You need to do it in steps, with some of them being mandatory. Skipping certain steps might later on corrupt bits of data which will break newer functions, etc.
It's recommended to do it step by step, without rushing the process. The easiest way is to work with an official Atlassian partner.
