Trying to install latest version 9.8.1 from https://www.atlassian.com/software/jira/download-archives
and get error .. Wrong JVM version! Jira requires 1.8 or 11 to run.
anyway to get around it please.

The Java version you are trying to run Jira on is not supported!
You need to install one of those Java versions that are compatible with Jira version: https://confluence.atlassian.com/adminjiraserver/supported-platforms-938846830.html
(As a matter of fact, the Jira installer is shipped with a Java JVM in it. The easiest is if you use that Java.)
