Can I set the comment sort default to oldest first?

In previous versions, the comments would automatically be sorted oldest to newest. Meaning every ticket created, this would be the default. With the latest version of Jira, the default is newest to oldest.

I know you can change the sort order, but I wanted to know if I can make sorting comments from oldest to newest a default. That way my team doesn't have to change the sort every time a ticket is created.

Welcome to the community

Yes you can do it if you are JIRA Admin but keep in mind that it will apply also for other actions like change history, transitions ...etc. plus it will be the default behavior for all projects/users.

From System --> advanced setting your can change jira.issue.actions.order to asc. i would assume that in your case the current value is desc. (check illustration below).

As a best practice, i would encourage your to test this change on a test environment (if possible) before applying directly on production.

Is there any option to change this as a normal user for myself as well? There is no way, I can get my IT to change this for all projects and users but it's still quite annoying and confusing having to change it every time again.

We need to grant users the privilege to do this for themselves. Quite inconvenient that the only way to fix this at the moment is to apply the change to all Jira users.

Global setting is unfortunate. Per user setting is preferable. I have many users on my team complaining about this change. It's a pain to have to keep clicking the sort order setting and we're not in a position to change the global default setting.

I see general user preferences on the user profile page https://jira.DOMAIN.net/secure/ViewProfile.jspa, but sort order is not currently one of them. Ditto on the above requests to add this, the "newest first" order is not very intuitive.

Changing the default to newest first could've been accepted more positively if the add new comment is also added at the top if it's sorted newest first. This way you can easily add a comment after seeing the most recent comment.

But the add comment text area is still at the bottom of the ticket, which means you still have to scroll all the way down to add a comment after reading the newest comment all the way from the top.

I agree with all the previous comments also. I'm an Administrator of our project Jira but evidently only the system Administrators can make this change. This is a pain to be displayed in this order and not able to change it for either myself or for just my Project team.

Same complaint here - we can change sort order to oldest first but this only lasts per session and resets after logging off and on again - a real oversight on this version
