Can I visualize issue dependencies?

Is there a way to visualize Jira issue dependencies when the issues do not have defined start/end dates/times?

The plan view in Jira is mostly for project management. It has a gnatt chart which shows you timeline view of your tasks. So you can say when tasks start/end and it will visualize that on a gnatt chart.

This type of view is great for project management planning where it is well known when tasks are expected to be completed by.

But say you have tasks that don't have dictated start/end dates and they only have dependency:

Tasks: A, B, C, D, and E
B can't start till A is done
C can't start till B is done
D can't start till A is done
E can't start till C and D are done

With that information in each of the Jira issues for A, B, C, and D, how can I generate a visualization like this:

You can't have that visualization with the built-in features, but there are several apps that provide it in some flavor.

The Issue Link Viewer app, for example, does it like this:

I may be wrong, but the Dependencies report in Advanced Roadmaps will show you dependencies even when they are not timeline based (note the examples in the attachment have dates referenced, though). I also think the Gantt chart itself will show dependencies, either via icon or lines, if you put in ANY sort of date (even one day after another, just to get something visual going). Assuming you have access to Advanced Roadmaps, it's just an option ("Dependencies report") in the dropdown next to the name of the Plan:

Humm. Mine has that and I can go to it but it's blank and I can't get it to show anything. Let me check with my Jira admin.

Easy Agile Programs has recently launched a dependencies report which gives program leaders a snapshot overview of their dependencies health

Report (read more here) is currently available on Cloud with DC release coming before end of August

total dependencies in the increment
broken down by health: conflict, at-risk, healthy, external
matrix table showing volume of teams' incoming and outgoing dependencies
more widgets planned: hide done dependencies, hide own team dependencies

There's also a visualization of the dependencies between teams and Jira issues as described by the OG poster.

There was a new enhancement recently called Dependencies map which lets users choose which types of dependencies and related issues they want to see.

Hi,

If you're using Jira Cloud, you should have a look on Program Board by huminder. It allows you to define any board structure based on system and/or custom fields, while showing dependencies in a clear way.

It's particularly useful in case of cross project/team/roadmap dependency management, to check where are the blockers for instance. It also has powerful sorting system based on the business logic associated to fields, if any (eg. Sprint field).
