Why does the Children Display macro not update to show title changes?

We make extensive use of the Children Display macro across one of our Confluence (Data Center) spaces. The macro displays the Confluence page titles perfectly the first time it is used. However, if any of the page titles are changed, the Children Display macro still shows the old page titles. Removing the Children Display macro and adding it again has no effect. Ironically, the preview in the Children Display macro shows the correct page titles in the preview window, but not on the page itself.

The last couple of times I've run into this, it's the indexing.

The macros rely on the index to retrieve their data when rendering for view, but they read the database or cache when you are in edit mode and previewing.

Confluence queues pages for indexing - when you edit, it doesn't run the re-index immediately, it drops it into a queue.  That means it might take time to get to the page you've just updated.

To check if it is just delayed a bit - go back a couple of hours later, and see if the macro is still wrong.  If it is, then 

• check the indexing settings under the admin sections. 
• also take a look in the caches, are there any non performant caches listed?
• I'd also want to look at the logs to see if there are errors in there (either about macros
