SCM Cache Plugin for Bitbucket Server: Old Caches not removed

We've been running disc space issues from large amount of caches and tried setting the interval to remove the dormant caches.  The documentation lists that it will remove expired caches but when and how is that determined?  Need help with either the rest api implementation or properties file configuration.
