Is this bitbucket server/DC hosting or Cloud bitbucket ?

And was this repository created via API ?

As the error says the Main branch cannot be the master, do you see any other values in "Main branch" dropdown or just that one option ? If there are other options in that dropdown try changing to "main" option and update.

In https://bitbucket.org/. I have created a repository without any files and tried to rename it. It was throwing error.

After adding file I tried to rename, it worked.

Then it is bitbucket cloud. Yes for rename od repo it should have branch with content in it.
