Is it possible to lock the default pagetree so that it can't be opened and viewed?

Hi all. A newbies question. It's obvious how to hide the standard pagetree, but we wish to lock it and require users to navigate sections of the site using just a page tree macros for that section. Is it possible to lock the default pagetree so that it can't be opened and viewed? Cheers. Gaz
