Why isn't a custom thumbnail width and height working in Confluence 3.5?

Question

In Administration Console > General Configuration, I am following the instructions here to set a thumbnail width of 800px. This doesn't work. Image thumbnails stay at the default 200px when using the markup:

{code}!image.jpg|thumbnail!{code}

What could the problem be?

This issue / feature request / bug has not gotten much attention, and I have not heard of any changes like that in the pipeline.  That being said, we are always adding functionality and listening to our community, so it isn't off the table.  Best thing to do is to vote/watch/comment on the bug/feature request ( https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/CONF-4572?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel ) and if there is any update on it, you will get an email.

It would be great if custom thumbail sizes could be set per-image, is this in the roadmap?

Been trying to track down what is going on with this...was able to duplicate it when inserting an image and selecting thumbnail, but the gallery macro picks up the size changes.  Finally figured out the issue:

When you attach the image and select thumbnail, your image is converted down to the set size.  If you change the size at a later time, the Gallery macro picks up the change and displays your attachments at whatever size you changed it to, but any imbedded thumbnails are set at that size and would need to be re-attached following the change to be the new size.

I believe this is by design due to this bug.  I was able to add a thumbnail image of any size smaller than the original file as long as the size was set when I added the image.
